As head of the decision, McCarthy will be responsible for shaping its underwriting strategy, driving disciplined portfolio performance and strengthening broker and client relationships across highly specialised markets.<\/p>\n
He will also focus on giving brokers clearer points of contact, more consistent decision-making and stronger alignment across related specialty lines.<\/p>\n
The appointment forms part of Markel International’s strategy to create a clearer, more scalable Marine, Energy and Construction structure in London, making it easier for brokers to access specialist underwriting expertise and support sustainable growth.<\/p>\n
The division will comprise four specialist teams: Marine & Transportation, Cargo & Cargo War, Fine Art and Specie, Energy & Power, and Construction & Engineering.<\/p>\n

Overall, this new structure is designed to enhance accountability, ease of trading and enable long-term business growth.<\/p>\n
McCarthy brings close to three decades of experience in global marine insurance, with deep technical underwriting expertise and a strong track record of delivering profitable growth across complex portfolios.<\/p>\n
Most recently, he served as Director of Marine at Markel International, where he oversaw divisional operations across London and the US, rebuilding key product lines and strengthening its market position.<\/p>\n
Under McCarthy’s leadership, the division will prioritise product leadership and investments in technology, talent, and partnerships to foster long-term value.<\/p>\n
The business aims for significant profitable growth over the next five years, driven by disciplined underwriting and a focus on complex marine, energy, power, construction, and engineering risks.<\/p>\n
